How a Tiered Master Key System Actually Works
A key hierarchy is built around a simple but powerful idea: a single key can open many locks, while those same locks each require their own individual key for day-to-day use. At the top of the pyramid sits the Grand Master Key, which opens every lock in the system. Beneath it you add Master Keys that open defined zones — say, all first-floor offices but not maintenance closets, or all tenant units in one building wing. Individual Change Keys (sometimes called servant keys) sit at the base and open only a single lock. Adding intermediate levels between grand master and change key is common in larger facilities, creating what locksmiths call a Great Grand Master or Sub-Master tier.
The engineering that makes this possible lives inside the lock cylinder itself. Each pin stack is cut to accept multiple shear lines — the precise points at which pins separate to allow the plug to rotate.
